MacFamilyTree:

Locate The Product Key (Retail Box)

Spotting The Difference

MacFamilyTree has been around as a retail product for a number of years. Many of you may have purchased the white box with the family tree at one of the Apple retail stores worldwide.

More or less obvious variations in the design of the box should help identify the version you have purchased and to find the original product key. Let’s explore the evolution of MacFamilyTree, beginning with the most recent »MacFamilyTree 5« and going back in time, one-by-one:

  1. Completely New — MacFamilyTree 5

You can easily tell apart the retail boxes of MacFamilyTree 5.x and 4.x by looking at the small »Version 5« instead of »Version 4« right below the product name. Inside the box, you will find a booklet that is considerably thicker than before with version 4.5. The product key is printed twice into the back of each booklet:

  2. Approaching Generation 5 — MacFamilyTree 4.5

While MacFamilyTree 4 saw its usability increase dramatically, the next major update was already on the horizon. So, we decided to deliver the final productions with product keys already upwards compatible with the next generation of the software: MacFamilyTree 4.5 keys are identical to the keys for MacFamilyTree 5:

  3. New Design — MacFamilyTree 4

With version 4, MacFamilyTree made its way to numerous international resellers and local dealers. The package design was dramatically different, and the software was the next big rewrite in the application’s history and a major step in terms of performance and features:

During the lifespan of MacFamilyTree 4, we had several minor changes to the box contents. Some productions contained a software version of the user guide and came with the product key on a single sheet of paper:

  4. How It All Started — MacFamilyTree 2

We started offering a »boxed« version with MacFamilyTree 2. Version 3 was available as an online upgrade or standalone purchase only.
