Name Formats & Additional Names
Setting MacFamilyTree's Preferences Correctly
Go to »MacFamilyTree« in the Menu bar and open the »Preferences« dialogue:
In the dedicated »Preferences« menu, you can find a number of useful, and frequently overlooked, functions for setting MacFamilyTree's behaviour and look: you may for instance define and modify name or date formats and custom icons for events, choose color/pattern settings for the window backgrounds.
We will now talk about how you can make MacFamilytree handle persons' names in the way that best suits your needs:
Name Formats In MacFamilyTree
A person's name may consist of different parts, including (multiple or combined) »First« and »Last« name(s). Depending on e.g. cultural, religious or social circumstances, there can also be name changes in various ways: »Pen« or »Stage« names, »Married« and »Family« names and a multitude of possible »Titles« and »Prefixes« and »Suffixes«.
Open »Name Formats« in MacFamilyTree's Preferences. With your mouse, you can select one of the sorting formats we've provided. Depending on user requirements, we may add more formats to this menu:
Using »Additional Names«
In the editor for each person, you can enter and edit his or her first and last name in the »Name & Sex« pane (1). To use any other naming variant, MacFamilyTree provides a dedicated »Additional Names« pane. Just select the corresponding »tab« (2), click the »+« (plus) button (3) to add a new item to the list, enter either or both of the additional first and or last name and select the name type with the »Type« pop-up button (4):
