MacFamilyTree:
Your First MacFamilyTree Installation
Installation CD vs. Download »Disk Image«
You may have purchased MacFamilyTree as a boxed product, online or from one of the many Apple Stores or resellers worldwide. The software license, and hence the functionality of the software are identical, but only with the retail package come a physical CD, printed documentation and hardcopy of your product key.

Downloading MacFamilyTree
For an »electronic« or »download-only« license, you will have to load the installation package from our MacFamilyTree Web page. It's available as a so-called »disk image«. This is how the download button for the full application looks on our MacFamilyTree product page:
Please refer to our tutorial Downloading MacFamilyTree if you need any help downloading.
Preparing The Installation
However you purchased MacFamilyTree, installation is a simple »Drag & Drop« procedure.
Depending on how your Mac is set up, after clicking »Download« on our Web page, or after inserting the CD into your optical drive, the following installation window appears on your screen:
-
The Installation Window
Should the installation window not open automatically, please double-click on either one of the following icons on your Mac's Desktop to manually open the installation window.

To avoid confusion later on, let's try to spot the difference between the different icons you may come across:

Drag & Drop Installation
In the installation window, we now ask you to »copy MacFamilyTree to the Applications Folder« on your Mac. Simply drag & drop the MacFamilyTree icon onto the »Applications« icon inside the installation window. Watch our short movie below, to see how easy a typical »Drag & Drop« installation is on your Mac:
Authenticate As Administrator
Depending on how you are logged on to your Mac, a small warning message may appear, telling you that »Applications« could not be modified. This means that you do not have sufficient user privileges to modify the Applications folder. However, you can temporarily assume the position of an »Administrator« by clicking "Authenticate":
You will then have to enter an administrator's name and password and acknowledge the dialogue by clicking »OK«:
Note: the administrator's »Name« you will have to enter in this window probably differs. Most likely it is your own user name, as per default the first user created on your Mac on installation actually is an »Administrator«.
Finishing The Installation
Another small window now displays the progress while MacFamilyTree 5 is being copied into the Applications folder:
Once the Installation is complete, please open your Applications folder and look for the »MacFamilyTree« icon. It is always good to check if everything has worked out as supposed to. So, if the icon looks just like the one in the screenshot below — everything is allright!
Important: please do not rename MacFamilyTree's program icon!
The Dock Icon
As we're just now inside your Applications folder, let's simplify your daily routine by adding MacFamilyTree to the Dock. Starting MacFamilyTree will be much quicker and easier!
To make MacFamilyTree visible on the Mac OS X »Dock« at all times, please drag the MacFamilyTree icon from »Applications« to a place in your Dock. Once you drag and hold the icon over the Dock, you will see other icons moving to make place between them, for you to put MacFamilyTree's icon there. Drop it where you see it fit — now you can simply launch MacFamilyTree by a single click on its Dock icon!
Again, we have prepared an illustrative movie to show you how this works on your Mac:
First Start
Now — if you have not already done so — you should start MacFamilyTree 5 for the first time. Just click on your newly-created MacFamilyTree Dock icon, and you will be greeted by our »Welcome!« splash screen:
Registering MacFamilyTree
Shortly after your first start of MacFamilyTree, a »Registration« window opens and covers the Welcome screen. Time for you to look for your product key and to register MacFamilyTree on your Mac:
If you purchased the boxed retail version of MacFamilyTree 5, you will have received a printed User Guide (or »Quick Start Guide«). Please look for the unique product key (»Serial Number«) on the back cover of the booklet. Customers who purchased the download-only version online, will have received an electronic license key via e-mail.
The key is an alphanumeric string divided five times by hyphens. It starts with »MFT-« and five 4-digit fields follow, just like this example:
MFT-1234-1234-1234-1234-1234
Please enter your product key exactly the way it is printed on your booklet or contained in the e-mail you received. Do not omit the hyphens or the preceding »MFT-«. Then click the »Register« button.
To verify that your registration has been successful, please go to the Menu Bar at the top of your Mac's screen. Make sure, there appears »MacFamilyTree« right next to the Apple logo. Should it not read »MacFamilyTree«, please click once on your MacFamilyTree icon in the Dock. Now, open the »MacFamilyTree« menu and look for the »Register…« and »Buy« entries. If they are grayed-out and unaccessible for your mouse, everything is OK: you have successfully installed and registered MacFamilyTree!
